Some days, the best part of planning a getaway is imagining a morning when nobody needs you to be in three places at once.
Coffee. Mountain views. Something fun to look forward to, without a schedule packed so tightly that you need another vacation afterward.
That’s the kind of North Conway getaway my family enjoys the most. A little exploring, a little scenery, and enough flexibility for real life.
North Conway makes a useful base for exploring New Hampshire’s White Mountains, but you don’t have to spend every waking minute chasing the next attraction.
Start with the village. Browse the shops, make time for a meal, and leave space to wander. Schouler Park offers a place for a picnic or a break between stops.
For a family trip, that breathing room matters. Sometimes everyone needs a snack and a chance to sit down more than they need one more activity.
The nearby Kancamagus Scenic Byway gives you a way to build mountain scenery into your getaway. Treat the drive as an outing in its own right, with time for designated scenic stops, rather than something to squeeze between reservations.
My approach to planning a mountain drive is to look at the route ahead of time and choose something I’m comfortable with. Beautiful views are much more enjoyable when I’m relaxed enough to appreciate them.
You also don’t need to cover the entire route to make the outing worthwhile. Choose your stops, look for some short hikes, check conditions, and give yourself permission to turn back when you’ve had enough for the day.
Sabbaday Falls, along the Kancamagus Highway, is an option for travelers who want an outdoor stop without committing to a long hike.
The Forest Service describes the approach as an approximately 15-minute walk on a gravel trail. There are stairs near the falls, so consider the terrain when planning for your group.
This is the kind of stop that can give a day some balance: time outside, something memorable to see, and room afterward for lunch or a quieter afternoon.
Check the latest access information before setting out, especially when weather could affect the trail.
Before choosing a hotel, think about what will make the stay easier.
Will you want breakfast before heading out? Does your family enjoy having a pool to come back to? Would you rather stay close to the village or prioritize room space?
Compare the full cost, including any fees and the cancellation terms. A room that works well for your family can be worth more than a list of amenities you won’t use.

Here’s how I’d structure a relaxed two-night getaway:
Arrival day: Check in, have dinner, and keep the evening easy.
Full day: Pick one main outing, such as a scenic drive with a waterfall stop, Storyland, The Conway Scenic Railroad, or Mt. Washington. Leave the afternoon flexible.
Departure day: Enjoy breakfast and a little village time before heading home.
The goal is to have something to look forward to each day while leaving room for weather, tired kids, or a place you’d like to enjoy a little longer.
North Conway offers a starting point for a trip that mixes village time with White Mountains scenery. How much adventure you add is up to you.
For me, a good getaway has room for the ordinary moments, too: finishing a coffee, enjoying a meal, and being together without rushing toward the next thing.
