Port Canaveral & the Space Coast:
Rockets, Beaches, and More
Port Canaveral may be famous for its cruise ships, but you don’t need a boarding pass to enjoy a getaway here! With Kennedy Space Center nearby, Atlantic beaches to explore, and opportunities to watch ships sail out to sea, this part of Florida offers a fun mix of adventure and relaxation. Plan a family weekend, add a coastal escape to your Orlando vacation, or arrive a few days before your cruise to enjoy the area. You can spend one day exploring space travel and the next with your toes in the sand—and that’s my kind of variety!
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex:
A Day of Discovery
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is the kind of place that can turn “we’ll look around for a few hours” into a full day of exploring. See the real Space Shuttle Atlantis, stand beneath the enormous Saturn V Moon rocket, and walk through the Rocket Garden for an up-close look at the history of space exploration. The Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour takes you beyond the main visitor complex to the Apollo/Saturn V Center, adding another dimension to the experience.
For an even more hands-on adventure, the Astronaut Training Experience® (ATX) lets you step into the role of a space explorer through immersive simulations and teamwork-based challenges. Practice skills for living and working on Mars, experience simulated microgravity, and discover how astronauts prepare for missions beyond Earth. This separately ticketed, four-to-five-hour program is a fun option for space-loving adults and families with kids ages 10 and older; participants ages 10–17 must have a paying, participating adult alongside them. I’d plan it as a dedicated part of your trip so you still have plenty of time to explore the visitor complex—especially if your future astronaut wants to see everything!
This is a great outing for curious kids, preteens, teens, and adults—you don’t have to be a lifelong space enthusiast to appreciate the scale of what you’re seeing. Between historic spacecraft and interactive exhibits, there’s plenty to spark conversations and keep different ages interested. I’d give this a full day of your itinerary so you can explore without rushing. It’s a memorable way to add discovery and adventure to a beach vacation or pre-cruise stay.
Beach Time:
Slow Down on the Space Coast
Balance your space adventures with some time beside the Atlantic. Nearby Cocoa Beach is a lovely option for a classic beach day, whether your plans involve playing in the sand, walking along the shoreline, or simply settling into a chair and listening to the waves. It’s an easy way to give your vacation a slower pace between bigger outings.
For a beach experience with a Port Canaveral twist, consider Jetty Park, where you can enjoy the shore and watch cruise ships pass as they head out to sea. The park also has a fishing pier, making it appealing for families who enjoy more than sunbathing. Depending on launch schedules and conditions, the area can offer views of rocket launches, too—an extra-special possibility rather than something to build your whole beach day around. Whether you’re staying for the weekend or extending a cruise vacation, leave room for an afternoon with no packed schedule.
My Favorite Home Base: SpringHill Suites by Marriott Cape Canaveral Cocoa Beach
My favorite hotel for exploring this area—including a stay before a cruise—is SpringHill Suites by Marriott Cape Canaveral Cocoa Beach. Its all-suite layout gives you separate areas for sleeping and relaxing, with sofa seating that converts into a trundle bed. That extra flexibility is especially helpful for families who want somewhere to spread out after a busy day exploring the Space Coast.
Complimentary breakfast makes mornings easier, whether you’re heading to Kennedy Space Center, packing up for the beach, or getting ready to board your ship. Back at the hotel, the pool offers another opportunity to unwind, while the outdoor fire pit provides a welcoming spot to sit in the evening. This is a home base for exploring the area rather than a beachfront stay, so plan transportation for your outings.
For cruise travelers, its location near Port Canaveral makes it a practical place to start your vacation, with cruise shuttle service and cruise parking options available for an additional charge. Confirm arrangements and current fees directly with the hotel when planning your stay. I’d recommend it for families combining beach time with Kennedy Space Center, travelers adding a few coastal days to an Orlando trip, and cruisers who want their vacation to begin before embarkation morning.
